'Mission Chancellor' for student exchange with Pak

Mumbai, Apr 27 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna today mooted the idea of launching a project 'Mission Chancellor' for interaction between students of Mumbai university and varsities in Pakistan.

On the 150th anniversary celebrations of the University of Mumbai here, Mr Krishna, who is the Chancellor of universities in the State, said the institution was the ''mother'' of many other universities, including that of Karachi.

In the undivided India, Mumbai university's jurisdiction extended to Sindh-Karachi, he said.

''I suggest that a contingent of 19 students, one from each university in the State should visit Karachi University as they will serve as true ambassadors of goodwill,'' he said.

Mr Krishna also called for building alliances with universities in other countries from where large number of students come to India for higher education.

Universities from UK, US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand are making overtures to Indian students to join their educational programme. We should not lag behind in attracting foreign students in Mumbai,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the Governor said the 150th anniversary celebrations of the varsity will be launched formally on July 18 when President A P J Abdul Kalam will inaugurate a national seminar on 'Leadership Tommorrow' organised by the newly-created Rajiv Gandhi Chair for Contemporary Studies and Research in Mumbai and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh would deliver the convocation address in the second week of December.
