Medha's Pol-Khol yatra keeps Gujarat cops on toes

Vadodara, Apr 27 (UNI) The Gujarat police have beefed up security in the bordering districts of Narmada and Vadodara following Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Medha Patkar's proposed move to enter the state today with her ''Pol-Khol'' yatra.

Police sources said adequate security measures had been taken at the main Narmada Dam site at Kevadiya colony in Narmada district bordering Madhya Pradesh and a couple of project oustees rehabilitation centres in the neighbouring Kawant Taluka in Vadodara district to maintain law and order.

According to Narmada district superintendent of police Nirupama Torwani, all necessary police bandobast were made in and around the Kevadiya colony since this afternoon, but the NBA leader was reported to be still camping at Badwani in Madhya Pradesh.

Ms Torwani however said that officially there was no NBA programme in the district. Besides, there was no NBA activities in the affected villages because of the possible visit of Medha Patkar, she added.

Medha, who recently broke her 20-day fast after the Supreme Court allowed construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on certain condition regarding proper rehabilitation of the project oustees, is currently leading NBA's ''Pol-Khol'' yatra to the affected villages in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat with a view to garnering support for her movement against increase in the height of the dam from the present 110 m to 121.92 m.
