Patna, Apr 27 : BJP candidate Nitin Navin today defeated Congress candidate Ajay Singh by a margin of about 82,000 votes in the byelection to Patna West Assembly seat.

The BJP retained the seat.

The byelection was necessitated following the death of BJP MLA Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha.

Counting for votes was held amid tight security arrangements at the state capital. Byelection for the seat was held on April 24. The segment felt vacant following the death of Mr Sinha in March this year. Mr Sinha was elected to the Assembly in the last election.

Mr Navin, a green horn, began his political career after the death of his father and contested the byelection on the BJP ticket.

Mr Navin said the election result was according to his expectation and announced to complete the unfinished works taken up by his father.

Development of the area would be his prime objective, he said.
