BJP demands white paper on rising prices of essential commodities

Shimla, Apr 27 (UNI) Demanding a white paper on the rising prices of essential commodities in the country, the BJP today accused the UPA Government of failing to check it and said the increase was the steepest since 1947.

''The white paper should also list the reasons for the price rise and why the government had failed to control it,'' party president Rajnath Singh said told reporters here after the arrival of the ''Bharat Surakhsa Yatra'' here in Himachal Pradesh.

He said the Manmohan Singh Government in its two-year tenure had failed miserably to check the prices of essential commodities, adding that the prices of the essential commodities were the highest since 1947.

''The government had not even taken remedial steps to check the prices,'' he said.

Mr Singh predicted that the prices of the essential commodities were all set to rise again now after the Rangarajan committee recommending the rise in the prices of petroleum products.

During the six years of NDA rule, the prices of essential commodities and inflation were completely under control prices have witnessed sleep increase in the present government's two-year tenure, he said.

Observing that the BJP's Yatra was receiving mass support from the public, he said it had already criss-crossed over seven states before reaching Shimla.

Earlier, addressing mediapersons, BJP leader Vijay Kumar Goel said over 200 public meetings had been addressed during the 2,500 km Yatra.
