Bangalore, Apr 26 (UNI) The official mascot for the Asian Grand Prix, scheduled to be held in the city, on May 22 was released here today.

Athletes from 20 countries had so far had confirmed their participation in the event, Karnataka Primary Education Minister Basavaraj Horati said after releasing the Mascot at a function here.

Assuring all help from the State Government for the smooth conduct of the event to be held for the first time in the city, he said Chief Minister H D Kumarasway was keen on ensuring that the event was held in such a manner that it brought name and fame to the state.

Replying to ace leggie Anil Kumble's suggestion at the function that sports be introduced as a subject for students at the primary level, Mr Horati said a proposal to this effect was already before the government. ''Parents are only interested in their children studying Science subjects. There is no use in just introducing sports as an optional subject from standard one to seven. Hence it is being contemplated to introduce it as a subject for examination,'' he added.

He said the government had already issued instructions to recruit Physical Education Teachers along with general teachers and ensure every school had a Physical Education teacher. This norm would be applied in the proposed recruitment of 10,000 teachers this year, he added.
