Madras University suspends staff on bribery charges
Chennai, Apr 26 (UNI) The Madras University today suspended two of its non-teaching staff, attached to the Institute of Distance Education for their alleged involvement in changing answer papers for the on-going semester examinations, after accepting bribes from the students concerned.
University Vice Chancellor Prof S P Thyagarajan said here that separate complaints were lodged against the suspended staff Ameen Ali and Chandra Babu. A complaint was also lodged against one Ansari of a private tutorial college, for his involvement in the scam, he added.
Earlier a private television channel exposed the scam by exposing a University staff and a private person accepting the bribes.
The Vice-Chancellor said the semester examinations just concluded and the evaluation was yet to commence. The students need not worry and the Varsity would ensure that nothing went wrong, he added.
He said the camera exposure was a remarkable evidence which had come at an appropriate time and the University would take necessary steps to improve the system.
