London High Sheriff honoured by UP assembly

Lucknow, Apr 26 (UNI) Dr Khalid Hameed, High Sheriff of Greater London, was today honoured by the Uttar Pradesh assembly for being nominated to the high post in Britian.

Assembly speaker Mata Prasad Pandey honoured Dr Hameed for his achievement in presence of several state ministers and senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Hameed said the honour was great thing for him. ''Being honoured by the centre of democracy in my own hometown will always be remembered by me.'' He, however, clarified that merit always played an important role in one's progress.

''I have never witnessed racism in Britian and people are selected on basis of merit,'' he claimed.

Earlier, former deputy speaker Ammar Rizvi welcomed the guests.
