Australian player causes major upset at ATP Challenger

Dharwad, Karnataka, Apr 26 (UNI) Australia's Luke Bourgeois caused a major upset in the Dharwad Open ATP Challenger Men's Tennis tournament here today when he ousted second seed and winner of Chikmagalur leg Danai Udamchoke of Thailand in the first round.

The Australian thrashed Udamchoke 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in straight sets at the Dharwad District Lawn Tennis Association's Rajashyaksha Pavilion court.

Bourgeois ranked 302 in ATP served 23 aces to oust the Thai in 87 minutes. Udamchoke struggled against the fast-paced Bourgeois, but still managed to offer resistance in the first set, which was decided by a tie-breaker.

However, in the second set, the Australian broke Udamchoke in the first game and held his serves till the end.

In the Doubles, Thailand's Ratiwatana brothers-Sachai and Sonchat-made it to the semi-finals when they beat Rieschick Sebestian of Germany and Troicki Victor 6-4, 6-3.

Indian pair Prakash Amritraj and Rohan Bopanna moved into the second round of the doubles, defeating compatriots Vishal Uppal and Sunilkumar Sipaye by 7-6 (8-6), Amritraj and Bopanna underwent some anxious moments in the first set, but it was an easy affair in the second. Karan Rastogi and Ashutosh Singh also made it to the second round, when they got past India's Mustafa Ghouse and Pakistan's Aslam Ul Haq Qureshi 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
