Atomic energy to boost country's growth: Scientist

Agartala, Apr 25: Atomic energy will be playing a crucial role in the development of the country, says the Bhava Automic Research Centre (BRC) scientist S K Malhotra.

The application of atomic energy would help to increase production of electricity and growth of other industries, Mr Malhotra said in a seminar on 'Social Application of Atomic Energy' yesterday, organised by the Tripura State Council for Science and Technology and the Institute of Engineers (India).

Mr Malhotra had highlighted the positive sides of atomic energy andmentioned electricity produced from it was pollution free.

''Atomic Energy does not cause destruction,'' the scientist said.

State PWD and Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury said Dr Homi Jahangir Bhava had thrwon light on the potential of atomic energy.

Speaking on the application of isotope and radiation technology on food processing, medical science, agriculture and health care Mr Chowdhury said, ''The economy of North Eastern region is based on agriculture. So grama radiation unit should be set up in the region.''
