Trial against Telgi, associates to begin from April 28

Mumbai, Apr 24: The trial in a murder case involving Abdul Karim Telgi, the kingpin in the fake stamp paper scam, and three others will begin in the court of Additional Sessions Judge U D Salvi here on April 28.

Telgi, his nephew Tabrez and associates Uday Sawant and Sajid Khan have been charged with the murder of the scamster's former driver Christopher Bhatti in 2001.

Summons have already been issued to the witnesses to give their evidence.

According to the prosecution, Bhatti, who used to handle Telgi's fake stamp paper business in Tamil Nadu, had allegedly stolen Rs 2.5 lakh and gone into hiding, but Telgi's associates went to Tamil Nadu and brought him to Mumbai.

Bhatti was allegedly brutally beaten up following which he succumbed to his injuries, according to an FIR registered by police on August 7, 2001, following which Telgi and his associates were arrested.

The charges against the accused were framed on March 24.
