Fully back Indo-US nuke deal: PM asks Germany
Hannover, Apr 23 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today urged Germany to fully back the Indo-US nuclear deal, stating that cooperation with India in this critical area would not run the risk of encouraging unauthorised proliferation.
''India has an impeccable record of non-proliferation. We are a responsible nuclear power. We have put in place export control mechanisms and other deterrents in line with the non-proliferation guidelines,'' Dr Singh said at a joint press interaction with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
According to official sources, the two leaders had had very useful discussions on a wide range of bilateral issues, regional developments and the international situation.
Replying to questions, Dr Singh acknowledged that India was not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), but had credible mechanisms that met the guidelines of the two treaties. Further, the conditions of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) were met by India's various laws.
