Forward Bloc nominee dead

Madurai, Apr 21: The Forward Bloc nominee for Thirumangalam constituency in the district, admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) after an aborted suicide attempt a day before the close of filing of nominations, died last night.

According to GRH authorities, G Senthil (27) of Mambatti Village near Thirumangalam being treated since April 19 died shortly before midnight.

After post-mortem, the body would be handed over to his family members, the police said.

Senthil, the eldest in his family and an ardent fan of filmstar Karthik, joined the Forward Bloc along with the actor and was made a functionary of the local unit. Subsequently, he was named the party nominee for Thirumangalam.

However, on Wednesday he reportedly consumed poison and attempted to end his life by hanging at his house. He was rushed to hospital.

Filmstar and Forward Bloc state president Karthik visited Senthil at the hospital yesterday evening. The actor, however, refused to subscribe to the version he was driven to end his life following threat from rivals, saying such a conclusion would be premature.
