NCP for assembly dissolution on office of profit

Shillong, Apr 20: The Meghalaya unit of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today demanded dissolution of the state assembly, claiming that several legislators from the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance(MDA) merit disqualification as they have been holding offices of profit.

The demand came after a media report said that the Election Commission (EC) was examining a representation submitted by the NCP alleging that 25 legislators, mostly from the ruling alliance, were holding offices of profit.

''If the EC disqualifies those legislators holding illegal offices of profit, as was done to Jaya Bachchan, the Meghalaya assembly may be dissolved and fresh elections called,'' said a statement, signed by NCP state General Secretary Paul H. Suting.

The party had earlier sent the representation, signed by Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya Robert Kharshiing, to the Election Commission, the President of India and the Supreme Court.

In its representation, the NCP demanded debarring the 25 legislators from contesting any election for 10 years, besides their immediate disqualification.
