Jaafari seen softening stand on Iraq PM nomination
BAGHDAD, Apr 20: Ibrahim al-Jaafari, who has refused to step down as nominee for Iraq's prime minister, says his fate now rests in the hands of his Shi'ite Alliance.
An Alliance official read out a statement today quoting Jaafari as saying he was chosen by the Alliance and they will decide whether he will step side to break a deadlock over a new government.
That suggested Jaafari was softening his position.
''You have chosen me and I return this choice to you, to do what you think is appropriate and you will find me ready to cooperate with your decision to protect and strengthen the Alliance's unity,'' Jaafari was quoted as saying.
