Australia seeks ICC clarification on Ponting's fine

Written by: Staff

Sydney, Apr 20 (UNI) In a clear indication that the fine on Ricky Ponting for his dissent against umpire has not gone down well with the board, Cricket Australia today sought clarifications from ICC on the issue.

Incidentally, CA chief James Sutherland had ealier sought an explanation from Ponting himself and after talking to the captain, CA now wants to hear the ICC version of the incident.

Ponting was fined 25 per cent match fee at the end of day two of the Test for showing dissent about an umpire's decision following an appeal for a catch against Bangladesh batsman Aftad Ahmed on day one of the game at Chittagong in Bangladesh.

CA Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the board accepted that the decision to fine Ponting would stand and can't be appealed and it also supported the principle that umpires' decisions should be respected.

''However, he believed more clarity was needed about all details involved in the issue, including all processes followed during the handling of the incident and subsequent decision to charge and fine the Australian captain,'' a CA release said here today.

It also quoted Mr Sutherland as saying, ''I have talked the Chittagong incident through with Ricky Ponting, who is disappointed as he takes his role very seriously and works hard to promote the players' spirit of cricket pledge to play the game hard but fair.'' ''I have also noted match referee Crowe's comment that he had sympathy for Ricky Ponting, and his confirmation that Ponting did not ask for the umpires' decision on the catch to be referred to the third umpire.'' He, however, added that Australia was not disputing the ICC's right to make the decision it has.

''But we want to be as good as we can be at being role models and understanding of all of the detail, including processes followed, will help us all learn how to be better at this in future,'' he added.
