Hyderabad, Apr 19: The BJP favours statehood to Telangana and Vidarbha regions, senior party leader and Leader of Oppositon in Lok Sabha L K Advani today said.

Mr Advani, who was here as part of his Bharat Suraksha Yatra while addressing a press conference here, said, ''We are committed to statehood for Telangana. Let the Congress bring in a bill in the Parliament in this regard during next month's session and we will support it.'' Asked why the party was not responding to letters from the UPA sub-committee on Telangana, he questioned its legal sanctity. ''Who has constituted it?,'' he said.

To a query why the BJP had failed to create Telangana state when in power at the Centre, he said the NDA government had taken the stand that new state could be formed when state assemblies concerned passed resolutions in this regard. Accordingly the three states of Uttaranchal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh were formed.

Though the party was for separate Vidarbha state, it could not realise it for want of any such resolution by the Maharashtra assembly. ''Still the party is in favour of statehood for Vidarbha,'' he added.
