Villagers oppose dam construction

Imphal, Apr 18 (UNI) The Mapithel Dam Affected Villagers Organisation (MDAVO) has condemned the effort of Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Manipur (IFCD) to complete work of Thoubal multipurpose project using security force.

It is against the long standing demand of affected villagers. The work is being done without reviewing the rehabilitation and resettlement programme, the organisation said.

The river was also blocked, it said. The MDAVO said it considers it as unfortunate the reliance on security force to suppress the will and democratic demands of the people.

The security forces were directing threats, intimidations and other abuses to the affected villagers, it said. The MDAVO reiterated its demand to halt all construction of Mapithel dam of Thoubal Multipurpose Project till the rehabilitation was reviewed.
