Rae Bareli, Apr 18: Samajwadi Party candidate Rajkumar Chaudhary today filed his nomination papers for the May 8 Rae Bareli Lok Sabha bypoll, where he will take on Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Uttar Pradesh PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav, SP general secretary Beni Prasad Verma and other senior party leaders were present on the occasion.

Mr Chaudhary filed four sets of nomination papers at the collectorate. The proposers in his nomination are Gajadhar Singh, Ramnaresh Yadav, Ramlal Akela and Om Prakash.

Talking to newspersons later, Mr Yadav exuded confidence of winning the bypoll.

''The two-year old SP government has achieved what the Congress government could not in 45 yrs,'' he claimed.

The minister also lambasted the centre for not extending sufficient financial support for development projects in UP.

Yesterday, Ms Gandhi -- accompanied by Amethi MP son Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka and son-in-law Robert Vadra -- had filed her nomination from the segment.

Senior party leaders including two union state ministers Akhilesh Das and Sriprakash Jaiswal, party's UP in charge Ashok Gehlot, UP Congress legislataure party leader Pramod Tiwari and UP Congress president Salman Khurshid were present on the occasion.

The byelection was necessitated after the Congress President resigned from the Rae Bareli seat last month following office of profit controversy. She had also relinquished the post of National Advisory Council (NAC) chairperson.
