Sensex above 11,800 mark as blue chips scale new highs

Mumbai, Apr 18 (UNI) Fired up by impressive fourth quarter (Q4) results, the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was up 248 points or 2.15 per cent this afternoon (1415 hrs) at 11,787.81.

Sensex touched a high of 11,809.31 with a gain of 270 points.

Most of the blue chips were up with handsome gains, while Reliance Industries was the major gainer in the afternoon session, going up by 3.90 per cent to Rs 884.80.

Bajaj Auto was on fire too, at up by 6.37 per cent to Rs 2,944.

TCS was also up by 6.16 per cent to Rs 2,020.85 after it announced impressive fourth quarter profit and 1:1 bonus yesterday.

Oil and gas giant ONGC was up by 5.27 per cent to Rs 1,309 after it announced a moderate profit of nine per cent on Sunday at Rs 14,175 crore in the last financial year (2005-06).

Earlier, the BSE Sensitive Index (Sensex) opened with a gain of 85 points at 11,624.97, as compared to the last close of 11,539.68 points.

Soon after opening, the 30-share Sensitive Index (Sensex) shot up 200 points to a high of 11,739, on the back of all-round buying.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) S&P CNX Nifty index opened higher at 3,429, as compared to the last close of 3,425 points and the key index traded 69 points up at 3,494 points, at 1415 hrs.

Among the sectoral indices, BSE Informnation Technology index was up by 3.09 per cent, oil and gas index was up by 2.83 per cent, technology index was up by 2.58 per cent, capital goods index was up by 1.83 per cent; bankex was up 1.40 per cent and health care index was up by 1.57 per cent, The other top gainers on the Sensex were - Larsen Toubro, Wipro, Cipla, Satyam Computers, Infosys and Reliance Energy.
