Sangrama, Baramulla, Apr 18 (UNI) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti today sought the people's cooperation in carrying forward her party's mission to make Jammu and Kashmir an economically self-reliant state.

Addressing several election meetings here, she said the PDP accords top priority to economic revival of Jammu and Kashmir in view of its immense potential.

The PDP Chief said during the past three years, the coalition government has made efforts to generate new economic activities, re-building damaged infrastructure and integrating the state with the developing market economy.

The period also witnessed revival of hope among the people of Jammu and Kashmir and a thaw in the ties between India and Pakistan, she added.

Ms Mufti said the initiatives taken by India since April 2003 have found matching response from Pakistan and the people of the entire country as well.

''The peace process needs to be further strengthened, sustained and taken to the logical conclusion for achieving lasting peace in the region in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,'' she added.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress of the dialogue process between India and Pakistan, the PDP Chief said the day was not far when the Jhelum Valley Road between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad and other links such as Suchitgarh-Sailkote and Poonch-Rawalakote would be opened for trade.

She expressed the hope that dry fruits, wool and wool products, handicrafts, processed food, willows, sports items, furniture, cement and vegetables would soon be exported from the state to all the countries in South Asia.

The PDP Chief said the changing socio-economic profile of the people in rural areas also attracted the government's attention.

The toll tax on fruits was exempted besides a number of measures, including the market intervention scheme, was introduced which provided succour to the farmers and the fruit growers, she added.

Ms Mufti appealed to the people to vote in favour of her party candidates to enable the PDP to carry forward its mission.
