India meets Philippines in Fed Cup opener tomorrow

New Delhi, Apr 18 (UNI) Battling with fitness problems, Sania Mirza will spearhead the Indian challenge against Philippines in the opening match of the Asia/Oceania zonal encounter at the Olypic Park in Seoul tomorrow.

The Indian team -- comprising Sania, Shikha Uberoi, Ankita Bhambri and Isha Lakhani -- have been placed in Pool B along with New Zealand, Chinese Taipei and Philippines while Australia, Korea and Uzbekistan form Pool A.

The winner of each pool will play off against each other to determine which team will be promoted to the World Group II Play-offs in July.

The teams finishing in the last two positions in each pool will play-off to determine which two nations are relegated to Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in 2007.

India plays Chinese Taipei on Thursday and New Zealand on Friday, according to information received here today.

India will be hoping to better their last year's record here.

In 2005, India beat Singapore and Kazakhstan by an identical 3-0 margin but was blanked by China 3-0 and lost the Group I 3rd/4th Play-off final against Korea 2-1.
