Government hospital doctors begin strike

Jamshedpur, Apr 18 (UNI) Work in the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial government hospital here came to a standstill since this morning after doctors and house surgeons resorted to an indefinite strike following arrest of six medicos.

The doctors were detained at Sakchi police station as they reortedly beat up the relative of a bodyguard of a district Congress leader Bharat Singh, police said.

The bodyguard Munna Mishra was stabbed by some miscreants and rushed to MGM hospital in a critical condition. He was immediately attended by the on duty doctor but when his condition deteriorated he was referred to senior surgeon.

But before the senior doctor attended, the patient died which trigerred off resentment among the relatives of the deceased and the enraged relatives allegedly beat up some doctors.

A police force, led by deputy superindent of police Rajiv Kumar, rushed to the hospital. The doctors allegedly assaulted some relatives of the deceased in presence of the police.

Police arrested six doctors and detained them in Sakchi police station while the others launched the indefinite strike to protest the arrest of their colleagues.

When contacted the superintendent of MGM hospital A K Verma refused to speak about the incident.
