Development should not overlook displacement, environment: PM

New Delhi, Apr 18 (UNI) In an obvious reference to the Narmada Dam controversy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today cautioned against a kind of development that displaces people from their roots without proper rehabilitation and is consequently seen by them as a threat to their existence.

The ongoing agitation over the inadequacies in the relief and rehabilitation of the people displaced in the process of construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam over the Narmada river found a distinct echo when the Prime Minister urged the industry to pay more attention to the rehabilitation of people displaced by the spread of industrial activity and urbanisation.

''Indian industry must pay closer attention to the environmental consequences of industrial development,'' Dr Singh added.
