Congress revokes suspension of AICC member

Chennai, Apr 18 (UNI) The Congress party today revoked the suspension of AICC member and former legislator A Chellakumar, whose supporters ransacked party headquarters 'Satyamurthy Bhavan' here in protest against denial of party ticket to him to contest the ensuing election.

In a statement here, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee(TNCC) President M Krishnasamy said as per the decision taken by the AICC, Dr Chellakumar would be allowed to continue in the party post.

Dr Chellakumar, who was elected from T Nagar assembly constituency in the 1996 assembly election, raised a banner of revolt when the seat was not allocated to the Congress in the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA).

He charged the state Congress leaders with deliberately forsaking the seat to the DMK. Following this, his supporters barged into the party recently and clashed with the cadres owing allegiance to Union Minister G K Vasan.

Subsequently, police filed a case against Mr Vasan's loyalist and party candidate for R K Nagar constituency 'Royapuram' Mano on the charge of attempt to murder.

Dr Chellakumar was suspended from the primary membership of the party on the ground of indiscipline.
