Modi to break fast as SC supports dam construction
Ahmedabad, Apr 17: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will this evening break his fast, which he began yesterday to protest the failure of talks with the Centre on the issue of raising the height of sardar sarovar dam on the river narmada.
Mr Modi had planned to sit on a 51-hour fast but decided to call it off at 1900hrs after the Supreme Court refused to put a stay on dam construction work.
Scores of BJP workers broke into jubilation at the GMDC grounds (the venue of Mr Modi's dharna), when the apex court order came to be known.
Welcoming the order, Gujarat Minister Ramanlal Vora said the stand of the state government has been vindicated. ''The Chief Minister has decided to break his fast as the order has endorsed the views of Gujarat,'' he said.
