Dr Thakur supports Narendra Modi on dam issue

Patna, Apr 17 (UNI) Former Union Water Resources Minister Dr C P Thakur today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to facilitate construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam over Narmada river as Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modis dharna was in the interest of the state.

He said when he was the Union Water Resources Minister and went to Gujarat, the state was reeling under severe drought and even a single drop of water was not available to the people.

He said during that time the people were supplied with water once a week by the government at the time of scarcity.

After considering all aspects it was concluded that increasing the height would only save Gujarat from such droughts in future, he said.

Dr Thakur further said China is working on Three Gorges Dam, which is even bigger than Sardar Sarovar Dam but there is no opposition to that as it was in the interest of the country.

He admitted that the problems of rehabilitation was a serious one and should be tackled with all sincerity and urgency.

He maintained that the rehabilitation package of Gujarat government was the best one.

Dr Thakur requested the Prime Minister to rise above party lines and help the construction of the dam.
