Hubli, Apr 17 (UNI) The city police attacked a five-member gang of dacoits when they were about to strike at a house here today and arrested three of its members and seized jewellery worth Rs 3.5 lakh from them.
Police Commissioner N R Nadamani told reporters that the arrest was effected by the police team, attached to the old-Hubli station.
The arrested were Gopal Govnindappa Walmiki and Iranna Hemanna Hanumsagar, both residents of old Hubli, and Parmeshwar Mallappa Tagginmani of Ron taluk in Gadag district.
He said interrogation revealed that the gang was involved in several cases, including six dacoity cases.
A search was on to nab the other two members of the gang-Davasab and Hasanasab.
To a question, Mr Nadamani said the crime rate in the twin city had come down considerably with matka gambling and illicit liquor business coming to a stand still.
He announced that anybody providing information on illicit liquor activities would be awarded with a case prize of Rs 2,000.
