Mumbai, Apr 16 (UNI) Indian Navy and Combined SAI XI scored identical 5-1 victories over BHA Colts and Jammu and Kashmir Police respectively to move into the second round of the 44th Bombay hockey Gold Cup being played at the Mahindra stadium here today.
In other first round matches, Hockey Bandra XI overcame stiff resistance from Maharashtra State Police before moving into the next round with a 2-1 win, while Bombay Customs downed North Eastern Railway 4-2 via penalty strokes after the match ended tied at 0-0 .
In the match between a Combined SAI XI and Jammu and Kashmir Police it was the latter who took the lead in the 15th minute after Jatinder Singh sounded the boards through a field goal.
This goal spurred on the SAI team as they pumped in five more in the next 45 minutes with their captain Osaf ur Rehman scoring a brace while Taaz Khan, Shashi Kant and Juzar Singh also scored a goal each to complete the rout.
Meanwhile, Indian Navy proved too good for the BHA Colts as Manoj Lohande and Sikander Singh scoreda brace each while Ajay Kumar added the fifth. For the losers Shivesh Singh pulled one back for them.
In the best match of the day, the Hockey Bandra team took the lead in the 37th minute after a barren first half through Topno Shashi who scored through a penalty corner. However Maharashtra Police struck back immediately in the 41st minute through Datta Shinde.
Hockey Bandra, however, scaled their win with Deedar Singh converting the team's third penalty corner right at the final whistle to take them into the second round.
The match between Bombay Customs and North Eastern Railway was a mediocre affair as both the teams were confined to the mid field to force and a penalty shoot out settled the issue in favour of customs .
Santoh Kushwaha and Balwant Singh could convert their strokes, while Mohd. Kalim and Mohd. Hasseb missed for Railways.
For Bombay Customs all their players -- Nilesh Negi, Hemant Gethe, Stanley Fernandes and Ganesh-- converted to put them into the second round.
