Students union protest VC appt

Aizawl, Apr 13: All the major students union in the state has decided to jointly protest against the appointment of Prof A N Rai as the new Vice-Chancellor of Mizoram University.

The Mizo Students' Union today annouced their support to Mizo Zirlai Pawl's (MZP), the largest students' body in the state, in protest against the appointment of the VC.

Both the student's body alleged irregularities in the appointment of the VC and said as long as there are qualified persons among local people they should be given preferences for real development of the university.

Student organisations said they could not understand how a 'junior and less qualified non-Mizo' became the Vice-Chancellor, while there were senior and more qualified Mizos'.

It further slammed the Governor and the Chief Minister for not taking initiatives to preserve the post for local people.

The MZP, meanwhile, in an emergency meeting today resolved to ensure that Prof A N Rai does not hold the office of the Vice- Chancellor.

The MZP has regarded this as a contempt towards the people of Mizo and an obstruction to the development of the Mizoram University.

It insisted that the post should be held by a qualified Mizo, who has exemplary experience in academic and administration and one who understands Mizo society.
