Medha demands her release, again

New Delhi, Apr 13 (UNI) Two days before the meeting of the Review Committee of Narmada Control Authority (RCNCA), NBA leader Medha Patkar today offered to furnish bail bonds to come out of police detention at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Describing the case of attempted suicide slapped against her as illegal, Ms Patkar said she was on fast demanding rehabilitation of the affected people of Sardar Sarovar dam and immediate suspension of construction of the dam ''in accordance with law, the Constitution and directions of the Supreme Court''.

''I aspire to live and continue the same till the affected people get their rights,'' she said in a letter to the station house officer of Parliament Street police station.

She claimed she was being held against the law regarding arrest/detention and in violation of her legal, constitutional and human rights.

Ms Patkar and her associates Jamsingh Nargave and Bhagwatiben Patidar completed 16 days without food as part of the NBA's protest.

Ms Patkar and Mr Jamsingh were forcibly shifted to the AIIMS on the night of April 5 on the 8th day of their hunger strike.

Meanwhile, the NBA has welcomed the government's decision to call a meeting of the RCNCA, but reiterated that construction works on the dam should be stalled immedaitely until all affected families are rehabilitated and shifted six months before submergence.

In continuing support to the NBA protest, prominent activist Anna Hazare was among those who visited the dharna site today.
