Kolkata, Apr 13 (UNI) After almost six months of dry weather at a stretch, the city tonight received rains that brought the much needed respite to the people.

The city was experiencing sultry heat wave conditions since the past few days as temperature hovered around 40 degrees Celsius. But with today's rain and thunder, the temperature came down slightly.

Few pockets of the city and hills of Darjeeling in north Bengal were facing acute drinking water problem because of the prevailing dry condition.

Farmers in major parts of south Bengal also could not carry out cultivation due to non-availability of water.

Met office sources said the maximum temperature recorded was 34.7 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature recorded 27.9 degrees Celsius today and the humidity was 85 per cent.
