Eastern Railway clocks highest freight loading record

Kolkata, Apr 13 (UNI) Eastern Railway achieved an all time record in freight loading of more than 47 million tonnes during 2005-06, surpassing the target of 45 million tonnes fixed by Railway Board for the year, its general manager Shyam Kumar said today. Last year, the total loading was 42 million tonnes, he said.

Mr Kumar said over 83 crores of passengers were carried by Eastern Railway in 2005-06 as compared to 76 crores during 2004-05.

The total originating earning of Eastern Railway has also gone up to Rs 2569 crores in 2005-06 against Rs 2277 crores earned during the previous year, he said.

Mr Kumar was speaking on the occasion of 51st Railway Week Celebration here.

He said among the other significant achievements of Eastern Railway was the opening of a third terminal named Kolkata station at Chitpur to reduce the load from Howrah and Sealdah stations in the last financial year.
