Thrissur, Apr 13: Noted human rights activist T V Eachara Warrier whose son P Rajan was tortured to death by the police during the emergency, died here today following brief illness.

He was 86.

Prof Warrier was admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital here three days ago after he complained of breathing problems.

On March one, 1976, Rajan, a final year student of the Calicut Engineering College, was whisked away from his hostel in the early hours along with another student, Joseph Chali.

The then Kerala Home Minister K Karunakaran had to resign following a habeas corpus petition filed by Prof Warrier to produce his son Rajan who had gone missing after he was picked up by police for acting in a play caricaturing emergency misrule.

Prof Warrier, who was the president of ''Emergency Victimised Patriots Forum'' and forum members decided to boycott the last local body elections to protest against the 'unholy tie-up' between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran).
