BSF-BDR exchanges fire in Darjeeling district

Siliguri, Apr 13 (UNI) Tension ran high in Phansidewa block near here following heavy exchange of fire between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) that lasted about thirty minutes today, BSF sources said.

However, there had been no casulaty so far, BSF's Additional Inspector General S S Sandhu said.

He said BDR resorted to unprovoked firing at Laldasjoth under Phansidewa block in Darjeeling district, about 40 kms west of this town.

Neighbouring district of Coochbehar's Meklingunj border had also witnessed heavy gun firing last night between BSF and BDR in which two Indians sustained bullet injuries.

The BDR resorted to firing when some Bangladeshis were driven out from the Indian teritory as they were picking stones from Mahananda river, Mr Shandu said.

He said while BDR fired about 300 rounds, BSF retaliated by firing about 100 rounds.
