Uproar in Assembly, Sena demands Rane's resignation

Mumbai, Apr 12 (UNI) Uproarious scenes were witnessed in the Maharashtra Assembly today as Shiv Sena accused its former leader and present Revenue Minister Narayan Rane of corruption and demanded his resignation.

Amid slogan shouting from Shiv Sena and counter-sloganeering from Congress-NCP, budgetary demands for Urban Development and Housing were passed without reply from concerned ministers. Similarly, important bills like ban on use of plastic, bill to amend the Bombay Stamp Act, Maharashtra Municipal Corporation (Amendment) act, Mumbai Municipal Corporation (Amendment) were passed amid the din.

Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar adjourned the house till tommorrow after rushing through the day's agenda.

Pandemonium began when Mr Rane rose to speak to clarify on the allegations made by Leader of Opposition Ramdas Kadam that Mr Rane had allowed M/S Mukund Ltd to sell off its 1,007,700 sq.mt plot in Chembur at a mere Rs 222 crore.

''The company had purchased the plot in auction in 1944 and it is entitled to give 50 per cent of the revenue earned through sale of the plot to the Government'', Mr Kadam said and accused Mr Rane of favouring the business house by waiving off the amount causing loss to the State.

When Mr Rane rose to make his statement in response to the allegation, Shiv Sena members rushed to the aisle and shouted slogans against the minister. Congress-NCP rushed to the defence of Mr Rane and raised counter slogans against the Shiv Sena.

Significantly, BJP leader Gopinath Munde left the house even as Shiv Sena members were on their feet demanding resignation of Mr Rane.
