Chennai, Apr 12 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Senior Leader M Venkaiah Naidu today dismissed as ''unrealistic and populist'' the DMK's promise of providing free colour television sets to 53 lakh households if it was voted to power.

''It is really shocking that a matured political party like the DMK had given an unrealistic and populist promise,'' he said addressing a meeting here after introducing the party's candidates for the May eight Assembly elections.

''A leader like Mr M Karunanidhi who had been in the government for a long time will appreciate uninterrupted power supply, good infrastructure like roads, housing, employment and education which are far important to the state than a colour television set,'' he said.

Charging both the DMK and AIADMK with engaging in negative and hate-politics and being interested only in furthering their family and dynastic ambitions, Mr Naidu claimed the BJP was the only 'dependable and viable nationalist party. ' The BJP in Tamil Nadu may be small party, but today it was fighting the Assembly elections with 16 alliance partners, including the Janata Party and Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam.

After Mr Naidu introduced the candidates, BJP State President C P Radhakrishnan administered the oath to all the candidates and took a pledge for allround development of the state.
