Petroleum adulteration racket busted; seven arrested

Mumbai, Apr 11 (UNI) Police have arrested seven persons for stealing the tankers carrying petroleum products and selling them after adulteration at Sewri market in South Central Mumbai.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dhananjay Kamlakar told mediapersons today that acting on a tip-off, the crime intellegence unit (CIU) seized four tankers carrying furnishing oil worth Rs 35.11 lakh and arrested seven persons from the spot yesterday.

He said the accused used to break the seal of the vehicles which carried petroleum products at Bombay Port Trust area in Sewri. They then used to remove petroleum products from the vehicles, mix water in them and then sell them in the market.

The accused have been identified as - Irfan Abdul Baig (21), Afzal Ahmed Ansari (22), Mohammed Farooq Sheikh (26), John Mohammed Khan (23), Mohammed Usman Sheikh (45), Suresh Sakharam Vichare (43) and Naresh Kumar Jaiswal (21).

They have been booked under Essential Commodities Act and were produced in the metropolitan court (holiday), which remanded them to police custody till April 13, Mr Kamlakar added.
