Kashmir under the grip of severe cold due to fresh snowfall

Srinagar, Apr 11 (UNI) The cold wave condition intensified in the Kashmir valley as upper reaches experienced fresh snowfall due to Western disturbances.

The Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was opened for traffic.

An official of the Gandola Cable Car Project (GCCP) told UNI over phone that world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and Khilanmarg experienced fresh snowfall today.

It was heavily snowing at Upperwat, he said adding a large number of tourists from different parts of the country and abroad were delighted to see the snowfall.

About one thousand to two thousand tourists are arriving Gulmarg daily, he said.

He added the ski slopes are still under few feet of snow, which is now a major attraction for tourists, mostly foreigners.

Reports of fresh snowfall were also received from upper reaches of Keran, Karnah and Teetwal.

Snowfall was also experienced at holy cave shrine of Amarnath, Pissu top, Mahaguns, Sheshnag and Chandanwari.

The Zojila, highest point on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway also recorded fresh snowfall. The highway has been closed for six winter months on November 17 last year due to heavy snowfall. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway, have already started snow clearance work on the highway and are expected to put it through in the first week of May.

The Srinagar and other plain areas of the Kashmir valley are under the grip of severe cold due to icy cold winds.

The maximum and minimum temperature was below normal, resulting in considerable cold which forced people to wear warm clothes again.

A weather office spokesman told UNI that minimum temperature was recorded at 4.8 degree which was two degrees below normal. The maximum temperature was around 16 degrees, again three degree below normal, he said.

He said the cold wave conditions was due to fresh snowfall on upper reaches in the Kashmir valley.

The snowfall was caused due to western disturbances,he said adding the cold wave will subside once the disturbaces will stop.

Spokesman said there could be rain or snow during the next 24 hours.
