CPM demands action against culprits in Meerut fire

New Delhi, Apr 11 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) today expressed deep shock over the blaze in Meerut yesterday, which claimed over 60 lives and injured 119 others, and demanded firm action against those responsible for the tragedy.

Expressing its sympathy to the bereaved families, the CPI (M) polit bureau said the government should ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.

''Firm action should be taken against the organisers and the officials who have neglected their responsibilities,'' a polit bureau statement said.

The consumer electronics fair, which the victims were visiting, was organised disregardng elementary fire safety and security regulations, it said.

The halls had single entry and exit gates, which contributed to the high casualty rate, the party said.
