Amanpreet pips Vivek for 10m pistol gold

Jalandhar, Apr 11 (UNI) Junior national record holder Amanpreet Singh registered a hard-earned victory over Vivek Singh to clinch gold in the 10 meters pistol (ISSF) for men in the 4th Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Memorial Masters Shooting Championship at the PAP Shooting Range here today.

Amanpreet, representing Indian airlines, clinched the top position via tie-breaker after he tied with his teammate Vivek with an identical total of 574 points out of possible 600. The tie-breaker rule resolved the deadlock as Amanpreet had registered 94 in his last card in reply to 94 by Vivek.

The Punjab Police Academy (Phillaur) product, Amanpreet shot 96, 96, 97, 98, 93 and 94 to total 574, while Vivek's progressive scores were 95, 96, 98, 98, 94 and 93.

Umesh Chandra of Indo-Tibetan Border Police was third with a net score of 573 (91, 95, 98, 99, 98, 92).

Jaspal Rana of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (95, 94, 96, 93, 96, 94) could not gain the podium placing with a total of 568 points.

Melbourne Commonwealth Games best athlete Samresh Jung of Central Industrial Security Force and Zakir Khan of Indian Airlines did not compete.

Meanwhile two-time Olympians Anjali Bhagwat and Suma Shirur today arrived here and had the feel of the shooting range on the eve of their 10 metres Air Rifle competitions.

Results: 10 m Pistol (ISSF) for men: 1. Amanpreet Singh (IA) 96, 96, 97, 98, 93, 94 (574); 2. Vivek Singh (IA) 95, 96, 98, 98, 94, 93 (574); 3. Umesh Chandra (ITBP) 91, 95, 98, 99, 98, 92 (573).
