Tata, Bajaj oppose reservations

Hyderabad, Apr 8 (UNI) Ratan N Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons Limited, the holding company of the Tata Group and Rahul Bajaj Chairman and Managing Director of Bajaj Auto Limited today expressed themselves against reservations in Institutes of higher learning, particularly the unaided institutes.

Talking to newspersons here after participating in the 'Graduation Class of 2006' of the Indian School of Business' Mr Ratan Tata said ''we must create a country of opportunities and not reservations,'' He also expressed fear that the move might lead to dividing the country into segments.

He said instead, every one should be concerned about the quality of life.

Mr Bajaj said there was no reservation system in the US in the private sector, excepting in those institutions run by Government contractors.

He said there was a simple guideline to the private sector, not to show any discrimination against Africans, Americans and Women.

He questioned the Governments both at the Centre and the States why they could not create proper employment to the 400 million working in the disorganised sector.

Mr Bajaj said politicians were for reservations for their seats and votes.

Mr Bajaj said most of the faculty was also against the reservations.

He said the Boards of different Unaided institutions were meetiing on April 21, 2006, where a decision would be taken.

He however, said ''we cannot brush aside the government decision, though we can disagree, in a democratic country. People elected them. I am not elected to the Parliament. I am just a voter.'' UNI JRK SS RAI2214
