Suicide attacker dies outside Afghan NATO base

Kabul, Apr 8: A suicide attacker detonated a car filled with explosives outside a base of NATO-led peacekeeping troops in Afghanistan today in the latest attack on foreign forces.

There was no immediate report of any casualties among troops from the NATO-led International Assistance Security Force (ISAF) in the western city of Herat near the border with Iran, a force spokesman said.

''It was a suicide car bomb in front of the ISAF compound,'' said the spokesman, Captain Livio Cavallaro. ''I saw pieces of the body of the suicide attacker on the street, but have no information about any possible ISAF casualties.''

Taliban insurgents fighting to expel foreign troops and overthrow the Western-backed government have unleashed a wave of violence in recent weeks, including attacks on military bases, ambushes and roadside and suicide bombings.
