Congress will break AUDF if needed support: Gogoi
Guwahati, Apr 8: Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today claimed that the Congress would get the required majority in the coming Assembly election.
Addressing reporters here on the last day of campaigning, he said the Congress would break the newly formed Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF), if it lacked the required number.
He called the AUDF as a fundamental party and said, " We will not have any sort of understanding with the AUDF but many of its leaders are in touch with us. If required we will break the party to achieve the required strength in the House. " Launching a scathing attack on the AGP, Mr Gogoi said, " AGP president Brindaban Goswami is a lame man and therefore, he had to seek the help of other regional parties in this election. " He pointed out that TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu lost the last election in Andhra Pradesh miserably. During his tenure as the Chief Minister, a total of 2088 farmers had committed suicide in AP and the per capita income of people had also come down.
On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav had not been successful in lifting the state's economy. Mr Gogoi citing statistics said UP was much behind in development if compared to Assam.
These leaders, who could not bring smile to their people, were today helping the AGP and talking of a Third Front, he said.
Criticising the BJP and its leader L K Advani, he said Mr Advani did nothing to protect the border when he was the Union Home Minister for six years. The Chief Minister said he had taken up the matter a number of times with Mr Advani after the Congress government came to power in the state.
" Mr advani is accusing today of continued infiltration. But my question is who had barred him from taking measures to prevent influx as the Centre did not require the permission of the state to erect the fencing or intensify patrolling, " Mr Gogoi pointed out.
The Chief Minister alleged that four unscrupulous businessmen were trying to become kingmakers in Asom and revealed thair names also. He said all of them were trying to ensure a defeat of the Congress because as the Chief Minister, he did not oblise to many of their demands.
" We will reveal more in due course to inform people of their motives and objectives. But, we are sure that their plans will not succeed as the Congress is going to form the government again, " the Chief Minister added.
