Three convicted in Mandrax seizure case
Mumbai, Apr 7 (UNI) Special NDPS court today convicted three persons to ten years' of rigorous imprisonment (RI), arrested in connection with the seizure of methaqualone tablets (Mandrax) from a factory premises in February, 2001.
Additional Sessions Judge P N Deshmukh held them guilty under sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The court also fined them of Rs three lakh each, failing which they will have to undergo further nine months RI.
According to prosecution, on a specific information, the narcotic control bureau sleuths raided the premises of a chemical factory - High Point Industries, situated in Taloja in Raigad district on February 8, 2001.
NCB sleuths had then seized 1,423.69 kg methaqualone tablets packed in a polythene bags inside a mini-truck parked in the factory premises and arrested four persons including the proprietor of the chemical factory.
Those who were convicted today are - factory proprietor Sridhar Laxman Chennuri (52) and transporters Mirza Qamar Haider (40) and Bhanudas More (40), while fourth accused Keshav Baba Joshi died during the trial.
