When we opened them, we had the Bible in our hand, and they had the land.'' -- Attributed to Kenyan independence leader Jomo Kenyatta. He and five companions were convicted on April 8, 1950, of ''managing'' the Mau Mau insurrection against British rule and were each sentenced to seven years' hard labour.
