191 criminals surrendered in Bihar under rehab scheme

New Delhi, Apr 7 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said the state has achieved major success in reducing the crime rate by speedy trials, conviction and rehabilitation packages for criminals surrendering before the police.

''As many as 191 criminals have surrendered under the rehabilitation scheme,'' he told reporters here.

Under this unique scheme, the surrendered criminals would go to jail and face trial while their families would be provided rehabilitation package of Rs 3000 per month, he said.

Mr Kumar said their families would also be given loan facilities and employment opportunities. Their rehabilitation would be on the same ground as leftist militants, he added.

Meanwhile, the state government is collecting data on all criminals who have jumped their bails and re-arrest them.

He said the state government has increased the speed of trials and cited the recent Gopalganj kidnapping case where the case was completed within 90 days and the accused convicted.
