Gulbarga, Apr 6 (UNI) The Ugar Sugar Factory will set up its third unit in Karnataka at Jewargi taluk in this district, its Chairman Dongaragoan Ugar has informed.

Talking to mediapersons here last evening, Mr Ugar and Factory Chief Executive Officer Ravi Mantur said Leader of the Opposition in the Assemby N Dharam Singh would perform the bhoomi puja and lay the foundation stone for the Rs 80 crore project on April nine.

Stating that 150 acres had been acquired for the factory at Malli-Naganalli village in Jewargi, Mr Ugar said crushing operations would start in February 2007. Besides Athani in Belgaum and the under-construction unit in Kudalasangama in Bagalkot district, the factory ran two units in Maharashtra at Tatgoan and Faltun on lease.

Mr Mantur said the proposed factory in Jewargi would initially have a crushing capacity of 2,500 tonnes a day, which would be increased to 5,000 tonnes a day in the second year of its operation.

The factory first proposed to produce captive power generation of 14 MW and gradually increase it in the coming years.

He said a study conducted by the factory had revealed that there was a potential for starting at least five sugar factories in the district. The factory did not expect any shortage of sugarcane for crushing in Jewargi, he added.
