India demands release of detained political leaders in Nepal

New Delhi, Apr 6 (UNI) India today expressed concern over the arrest and detention of several political leaders in Nepal and urged the Himalayan Kingdom to immediately release those arrested and return to the path of dialogue and reconciliation.

An external affairs ministry spokesman told reporters here that ''...We are concerned over the arrests and detention, once again, of several political leaders, professionals and students which we strongly deplore. These actions by the government in Nepal are counter productive.'' Stressing the need for cooperation among constitutional forces in Nepal instead of confrontation, the spokesman said, ''We urge the immediate release of those arrested and a return to the path of dialogue and reconciliation.'' Referring to the recent Maoist attack, the spokesman said that New Delhi condemns the act of violence by the Maoists, including the last night's attack at Malangawa in Sariahi district.
