Mumbai, Apr 6: The Mumbai High Court has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to appoint life guards and provide infrastructure at the city beaches by the end of this month.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice K Vyas and Justice D Y Chandrachud passed an interim order yesterday , directing the BMC to appoint life guards in response to a PIL filed by an NGO, Janhit Manch, seeking the court's nod to direct BMC and the state government to implement safety norms at the city beaches.
The PIL said the ministry of tourism in Goa has framed certain guidelines for persons visiting and taking part in water sport activities. However, in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai, there are neither such guidelines nor any safety norm.
The PIL also said a large number of persons including youth and minors die due to drowning every year.
Meanwhile, the court has also directed the government to file a detailed affidavit with an action plan regarding the implementation of safety norms at the beaches here.
