Farmers should adopt 'Tatkal' technique for saving power

Ludhiana, Apr 6 (UNI) Use of Low Transmission (LT) shunt capacitors can lead to reduction of LT line losses besides improvements, voltage and reduction of load on distribution transformers, according to experts.

These findings are based upon a study carried out by a team of West and Suburban Circle officers/ officials under the guidance of D B Arora, Chief Engineers /DC, Central Zone, Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB), Ludhiana in respect of water pumping set motors installed in the agricultural sector in rural areas.

On the basis of the study conducted, Mr Arora claimed that LT shunt capacitors if installed by the farmers can help save a great deal of electricity in this state which faces acute power shortage and frequent power cuts.

The LT shunt capacitor installation technique is the simplest and cheapest technique that can be implemented quickly and result in immediate reduction in losses. Hence Mr Arora has called it the 'TATKAL'(immediate) technique.

Mr Arora appealed to all the agricultural pumping set consumers in the entire state of Punjab to install LT shunt capacitors across their tubewell motors for their benefit as well as in the national interest.

In the state of Punjab, consumption of energy in agricultural sector is of the order of 30 per cent of total energy consumption in the state. This three per cent reduction in losses will save huge energy which will be available for giving more supply to the tubewells which in turn would increase agricultural production.

For the study, nine distribution transformers feeding 102 AP connections were selected. Energy meters were installed at the premises of tubewell consumers for recording the energy consumed and on the distribution transformers for recording the energy pumped.

According to Mr Arora, checking of parameters of all motors was carried out and special arrangement was made for determining the capacity of LT shunt capacitors required for bringing the power factor of the tubewell motor near unity. LT line losses before and after installation of shunt capacitors were calculated.

Mr Arora said that it was observed that LT line losses reduced by about three per cent.Direct installation of shunt capacitors will result in reduction in distribution of transformer losses and High Transmission (HT) line losses indirectly.

Improvement in 10-15 volts was observed in voltage profile of LT line, thereby benefiting the tail end tubewell consumers,the study showed. Twenty per cent percent reduction in loading of distribution transformer was observed which shall reduce the damage rate of distribution transformers and increase the life of transformer.
